Kunes Mad City Mitsubishi Drives Out Hunger with Local Food Pantry Support

Published on May 21, 2025 by Matthew Kroll

At Kunes Mad City Mitsubishi, we believe our role in the community goes far beyond selling vehicles—we’re here to drive real change. That’s why we recently joined our fellow team members from all 41 Kunes Auto Group dealerships to pack meal kits for families facing hunger in Southwestern Wisconsin.

This impactful initiative, coordinated with Second Harvest Foodbank, brought together hundreds of Kunes employees, all united by one mission: to help ease food insecurity in our region. With nearly 147,000 people in Southwestern Wisconsin currently struggling to put food on the table, the need has never been greater.

A Company-Wide Effort Fueled by Compassion and Competition

Every Kunes dealership rolled up their sleeves for this cause, including our passionate team here in Madison. We were proud to be part of a friendly competition to see which dealership could pack 600 meal kits the fastest. But while the challenge was exciting, the real reward was knowing that our work would make a tangible difference in people’s lives.

Each meal kit included essential pantry staples like peanut butter, canned tuna, green beans, pasta, sauces, and oatmeal packets—foods that are both nutritious and shelf-stable, ensuring they reach families in need in the most effective way possible.

Why Now? The Summer Hunger Crunch

While many associate food pantry donations with the holiday season, spring and summer can actually be the most difficult times for food-insecure families, especially those with children who rely on free or reduced lunch programs during the school year.

“People think about donating to food pantries a lot around Thanksgiving and Christmas,” said Jennifer Myers, Our Chief Marketing Officer. “But this time of year is a big crunch because every kid who’s in a free and reduced lunch program is now going to be home looking for food.”

That’s exactly why this initiative came at the perfect time. As students head into summer break, our team stepped in to help fill the gap and ensure that no child goes hungry.

The Power of Community, The Impact of Kindness

Kris Tazelaar from Second Harvest Foodbank put it best: “I’m always amazed when people come together to help others, and that’s really what this is all about.” The packed meal kits will provide a total of 257,000 meals, distributed across five regional food pantries in three states. That’s 257,000 opportunities to nourish, support, and uplift our neighbors—most of whom our team will never meet, but whom we care about deeply.

Kunes Mad City Mitsubishi: Proud to Serve

Our involvement in this initiative is just one example of how we’re living out the values that define Kunes Automotive Group. At Kunes Mad City Mitsubishi, we are committed to making a lasting difference—both on the road and in our community.

Whether you’re visiting us for a new car, vehicle service, or just want to learn how you can get involved in our next community outreach event, our doors are always open.

Together, we can drive out hunger—one meal kit at a time.
